Presentation of Changes to the Vacant Unit Tax Rebate Program
The Province of Ontario announced that effective 2017, enhanced flexibility options to the Vacant Unit Tax Rebate Program and Vacant and Excess Land Property Tax Subclasses in the Commercial or Industrial classes would be available to municipalities.
The current Vacant Unit Rebate Program provides 30% tax rebate to those lands in the Commercial Class and 35% rebate for the lands in the Industrial Class. The cost of providing the Vacant Unit Rebate Program is subsidized by all other taxpayers in the Township of Guelph/Eramosa.
Municipalities have been given the option to reduce or eliminate the vacant unit rebate program and percentage reductions, bringing those properties to their full rate liability. The Township of Guelph/Eramosa is proposing to eliminate the vacant unit rebate program, effective for the 2019 taxation year.
