The Township of Guelph/Eramosa is committed to recognizing, protecting, and promoting its heritage through thoughtful planning, conservation, education, and community partnerships. Our team is available to help individuals who are interested in learning about designated heritage properties, exploring local history, or understanding how heritage conservation works, including providing information about the programs, policies, and resources that support the preservation of our community's unique character.
A Designated Heritage Property is a property in the Township which has been formally designated under Part IV or Part V of the Ontario Heritage Act, by way of by-law. Heritage designation provides long-term protection for properties with significant cultural heritage value, helping to preserve their unique character and historical importance.
The Township of Guelph/Eramosa's Heritage Committee is an advisory committee of Mayor & Council, established by our municipality under the authority of Section 28(1) of the Ontario Heritage Act. The Committee provides advice on the conservation and protection of our community's cultural heritage resources, and even helps fund local projects with a heritage focus. In addition to formally designating properties under the Ontario Heritage Act, the Township runs the Heritage Plaque Program as an informal way of recognizing properties with architectural, cultural, or historic value. This program is a unique staple of the Township of Guelph/Eramosa, and offers a alternative for individuals interested in having their properties recognized without having protections put in place under provincial legislation.
