Types of Heritage Properties

A Designated Heritage Property is a property in the Township of Guelph/Eramosa which has been formally designated under Part VI or Part V of the Ontario Heritage Act through the passing of a by-law by Mayor & Council. These properties have demonstrated they meet a collection of criteria outlined by the Province of Ontario in O.Reg. #9/06, meaning they have features (e.g., structures, landscapes, etc.) which have been deemed culturally, architecturally, or historically significant.

Heritage designation provides long-term protection for properties with significant cultural heritage value, helping to preserve their unique character and historical importance. The heritage features of properties which have been designated under the Ontario Heritage Act are afforded special protections, and individuals looking to alter a designated property are advised to contact the Township's Deputy Clerk to ensure no restrictions are in place which might impact your project.

The Township of Guelph/Eramosa created the Heritage Plaque Program as an informal avenue to allow for properties with historic features to be recognized without being formally designated under the Ontario Heritage Act. Opposed to Designated Heritage Properties, properties which are awarded Heritage Plaques have no special protections.

In accordance with Section 27(1) of the Ontario Heritage Act, the Township keeps a register of all properties situated in our municipality which have been recognized for their cultural heritage value or interest. This list is updated and maintained by the Township's Clerks / Legislative Services Department, and contains both Designated Heritage Properties and Heritage Plaque Properties.
